Australia is an island continent in the southern hemisphere. The first inhabitants of Australia were the Aborigines who lived there for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. It is believed that the Dutch ships might have been the first European ship to sight the Australian coast, but European settlement began with the arrival of the British in 18 th century.
Australia has developed many connections in Britain, first as a British colony, and then as a domain within the British Empire. After the Second World War, Australia began to develop deeper ties with other parts of the world, and there was no increase in immigration from countries of the Mediterranean and then south-east Asia. As a result, Australia is now a multicultural country, although many historical and cultural ties with Britain also exist. This is reflected in the cuisine, which combines in Britain influenced cuisine, with dishes from Asia and the Mediterranean, as wellsome of the foods on the basis of the "bush" (food crops, is traditionally consumed in nature known as the "Outback", which are often inspired by aboriginal food).
